These special auk birds return to their bird cliffs on Stora Karlsö of the west coast of Gotland every summer. To lay their beautiful, colourful eggs, nurse their chicks and feed on the sprats in the water around the islands in the central seclusion or the Baltic Sea.
"I made these enamel pins with my watercolours as models to be able to carry these rare, beautiful birds with me even when they are out at sea. Reminding me of the curiosity of the Razorbill, the sweet fluttering of their wings when they come to greet to ferry and the elegance of the Guillemot and their point eggs sitting on the cliffs edge. The dramatic flight their chick does during the summer night when diving from their mothers on the cliffs down to the pebble beach and on to their fathers waiting patiently in the sea. Brave, trusting and full of excitement.
The colourful eggs of these birds also inspired a hat and mittens in my latest book - nature, that and those of us who populate it never stops to amaze and inspire."
